paul kastick biography
Having been fascinated by the forces of music throughout his childhood in Montego Bay, Jamaica, (which included piano, keyboards, bass, and horns), the drums is what Paul "GrooveGalore" KasticK would go on to master. The mastery of his instrument(s), as Kastick would put it, “was real life experience”, wood-shedding, gigging, and the road, took off at an early age for Paul. Always being young and pure at heart, he remains adventurous and versatile in his approach to live playing and producing, breaking down the boundaries of music, and bringing his own interpretation to the grooves. Now in his innovative prime, his quest is to be groovier & more cutting edge with his creative talent, in both the studio, and during his live touring performances around the world.
Kastick’s been in overdrive since the 80’s, when he was chosen in 1989 to rule the drummer’s chair for Jamaica’s top backing band 809. Since then Kastick has never looked back, nor taken any prisoners, as a Drummer, Music Director and Producer. He has gone on to produce for artists such as Tessanne Chin, 2013' Winner of the hit TV show 'The Voice', as well as, touring the globe with musical powerhouses including; Shaggy, Grammy nominated Maxi Priest, Reggae legend Bob Marley’s son Ky-Mani Marley, and the internationally renowned Reggae group Big Mountain. The experiences of a touring and studio musician awarded Kastick the opportunity to play with more than one backing band as well. In addition to Jamaica’s 809 Band, he played, recorded and toured with GrooveSociety, the original backing force behind Shaggy, from 1996-2000. In 2000, Kastick formed NativeXaymaycan Entertainment Muzik, Inc., the parent company of GrooveGalore Productions, his creative nest. KaticK's projects include major production work on all of Big Mountains last 6 CD releases; Things To Come (2000), One Love (2001), Cool Breeze (2001) New Day (2002), Cover’s In Paradise (2003), Big Mountain’s Greatest Moments (2004), and their latest release Perfect Summer (2016). Kastick also co-produces two of Jamaica’s hottest female Reggae, Punk, and Rock exports, Tessanne Chin (Winner of "The Voice" 2013) and Italee. |
Kastick currently anchors the big bad, cutting edge, live drum sound and programming behind Maxi Priest, Ky-Mani Marley, Beres Hammond, Big Mountain, Diana King and Tessanne Chin under the alias GrooveGalore MuziK. His repertoire includes having toured, recorded, and performed alongside such musical greats as the late Dennis Brown, Shaggy, Rayvon, UK Pop sensation Apache Indian, Big Mountain, Percy Sledge, Gwen Guthrie, Diana King, Aswad, Steel Pulse, Freddie McGregor, Gregory Isaacs, Judy Mowatt, Capleton, Luciano, Buju Banton, Soul Case, Janna Bent, Beenie Man, Shabba Ranks, Chaka Demus & Pliers, Tony Rebel, Sizzla, Junior Kelly, Culture, Richie Stephens, Benji Myazz, Dean Fraser, Bob Marley’s Junior Marvin, Marcia Griffiths, I Threes, Rita Marley, Beres Hammond, Terry Linen, Carlene Davis, Junior Tucker, Leon & The Peoples, Bat-Sheva, Japanese DJ Nahki, and RnB sensation Sharissa. His musical influences include the industry biggest names; Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, Earth, Wind & Fire, Toto, Third World, Chalice, Sly & Robbie, Black Uhuru, Dave Matthews Band, Seal, Santana, Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Pink, Shakira, and Prince. His drumming style is all-around, and includes varying genres, from hard core Dancehall, Loversrock, Rock Alternative, RnB, and Soul, to Hiphop. |

us rock classic gets reggae treatment
American band Steely Dan's unique blend of jazz and rock made them hugely popular during the 1970s.
Their 1974 song, Night by Night, gets a reggae-rock makeover courtesy of singer Paul Kastick and guitarist Rudy Valentino, Jr.
Kastick, best known as the drummer for Maxi Priest and Big Mountain, shows his vocal skills on the song which he co-produced with Valentino, a veteran American axeman with whom he has worked for many years. They co-produced their version, which was released on August 25 by Kastick's GrooveGaloreMuzik and Valentino's Valentino Muzik.
Early in his career on the Montego Bay hotel scene, Kastick was known to sing a song or two and did backing duties as well, but it has been some time since he tried out his vocals.
"Singing is not my area of expertise, but I know certain things because I have worked with top singers over the years," he said. It was Valentino's idea to cover Night by Night one year ago. Kastick admitted being slow to get on board, but once he listened to the initial track, they immediately began recording the song.
He and Valentino have done numerous recording sessions. Their biggest production is Tessanne Chin's 2006 hit single, Hideaway.
Night by Night is part of My Reggae Rockin Journey Vol: 1, an album of Kastick/Valentino cover songs originally done by rock bands such as Whitesnake, Poison and Def Leppard.

KasticK takes it night by night
"For 40 years, Paul Kastick has held the drummer’s seat in bands for famous acts including Maxi Priest and Big Mountain. On his latest projects, he steps out front as a vocalist. Kastick sings on ‘Night by Night’, a song he co-produced with longtime collaborator, American guitarist Rudy Valentino Jr. It is a reggae-rock cover of jazz-rock band Steely Dan’s 1974 song. Their version was released on August 25 by Kastick’s GrooveGaloreMuzik and Valentino’s Valentino Music.
Kastick admits there was some apprehension about going on record as a singer. “There are jitters when you realize now that you are the one that is going to do the singing and harmonies. Singing is not my area of expertise, but I know certain things, because I have worked with top singers over the years,” he said.
The idea to cover ‘Night by Night’ came from Valentino, a session musician who has worked with several Jamaican acts such as Richie Stephens, Lavaska and Tessanne Chin. His biggest Jamaican production to date, has been Chin’s ‘Hideaway’, a 2006 reggae-rock jam he co-produced with Kastick.
‘Night by Night’ is part of ‘My Reggae Rockin’ Journey Vol: 1’, an album that hears Kastick and Valentino covering hard rock classics such as ‘Here I go Again’ and ‘Is This Love’ by Whitesnake, and ‘Every Rose Has its Thorn’ by Poison.
Kastick is from Montego Bay, where he started his career during the early 1980s as a drummer in hotel bands. His first big break was with the 809 Band alongside saxophonist Dean Fraser, trombonist Nambo Robinson and bassist Gibby Morrison."

KASTICK AND VALENTINO COVER STEELY DAN SONG
"The first time drummer Paul Kastick met American guitarist Rudy Valentino Jr., they were at a recording session in 1999 for roots singer Lavaska at Tuff Gong studios in Kingston. Over the years, their fusion of rock and reggae has enhanced songs by Tessanne Chin and Richie Stephens. The duo’s latest project is a cover of Steely Dan’s ‘Night by Night’, which was released on August 25.
The original song features Steely Dan’s signature jazz/rock sound, but for their version, Kastick and Valentino go for a reggae feel with searing rock guitar solos. Kastick, longtime drummer for Big Mountain and Maxi Priest, makes his recording debut on vocals.
He said while he is aware of Steely Dan, he never heard ‘Night by Night’ until Valentino played it for him in 2022. Their cover is co-produced by GrooveGalore Muzik, Kastick’s label and Valentino Muzik. “Rudy sent me this track from last year, I never know the song, never heard the song before and I was trying to see if I could work on it before going on tour with UB40, Maxi, The Wailers, and Big Mountain. And we didn’t get a chance to do anything the whole year, and then that tour finished down in September, and this year we ended up in Detroit doing some stuff and I was like, ‘let me learn this track’,” Kastick recalled.
After the veteran musician discovered that the initial track was “catchy and infectious”, next step was adding a reggae vibe with Jamaican patois, complemented by Valentino’s rock riffs."

Getting into the rhythm with Paul KasticK
"The Jamaican drummer talks about international touring and ties to Cayman
Any band will tell you that to really bring the energy, you have got to have a solid drummer. From Gene Krupa to Dave Grohl, Questlove and Sheila E., many have made names for themselves not as frontpeople, but as the heart of the group they play for.
Paul KasticK may not be a name familiar to you, but in the music world, he is one of the kings of the sticks. The likes of Maxi Priest and Big Mountain rely on him to provide the beats for their big hits and he has travelled all over the world to support award-winning artists. KasticK also has a big connection with the Cayman Islands, and has worked with local musicians and singers both as a drummer and producer.
On his last trip to Grand Cayman, we asked him what it is like to be in the business and who some of his dream collaborators would be.... "

kastick gets in the groove
"In 2011, a reggae-rocking song named Hideaway announced a relatively unknown singer named Tessanne Chin. Clocking over five minutes, its multiple chord changes and crunching guitars helped make it one of the biggest hits in Jamaica that year.Hideaway was co-produced by Paul Kastick, one of contemporary reggae's best known drummers. Between touring with Big Mountain, Maxi Priest and Diana King, he is preparing to release projects through his GrooveGalore MuziK company.
Let me Love You by Chin and Miami-based deejay Honorebel relaunched the label last year. Say I, a collaboration between Kenyan artiste Chiluba and Maxi Priest, and Show Me by Canadian singer Belinda Brady, are two its latest projects.
An avid fan of rock music, Kastick told the Jamaica Observer recently that some of GrooveGalore Muzik's releases will reflect that sound."
